Triple E was founded in 2006 by Tom Bade, who in 2014 was elected number 34 in the Sustainable Top 100 in newspaper Trouw. Since its inception, Triple E has developed into a leading agency in research into the benefits of nature and landscape, strategic concept development and closing social deals. Since 2006, the organization has conducted more than 200 studies focusing on themes relating to the economic benefits of nature and landscape, area development, regional economy and land consolidation.
Because Tom Bade can write well, many of these studies are not presented in boring reports, but in legible books. A total of 55 books have been written, mostly with an economic angle. For example, research has been conducted into the green benefits of the Veluwe, the Weerribben-Wieden and the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. All presented in wonderful books. The economic benefits of green roofs, city trees and even heritage have also been identified. For heritage, this has been recorded in the well-known book ‘Your Home is Your Castle’ (Eigen Haard is Goud Waard).
Well-known recent studies that have resulted in books are ‘Forward Mars’ (Voorwaarts Mars) in which Tom Bade has developed a new concept in the form of the circular greenhouse/circular greenhouse horticulture and ‘Land consolidation through a different perspective’ (Ruilverkaveling door een andere bril), commissioned by Greenhouse Horticulture Netherlands (Glastuinbouw Nederland). This book elaborates a concept developed by Tom Bade for the Land Registry (het Kadaster), namely 3D land consolidation. These studies also show that Triple E also excels in developing a new discourse for organizations. Other well-known examples of this are ‘The Living Garden’ (De Levende Tuin) for the VHG and ‘Road Verge to Paper’ (Van Berm tot Bladzijde) for Rijkswaterstaat. In recent years, more and more assignments have been carried out that focus on shaping sustainable financing for the management of nature and landscape and generating new sources of income and savings. Recent clients who have made use of these services are the State Forestry (Staatsbosbeheer), Rijkswaterstaat, the Province of Brabant, Landscape Heritage Utrecht (Landschap Erfgoed Utrecht), the Land Registry (het Kadaster), LTO Glaskracht, Geldersch Landschap and Kasteelen and the Vlaamse Waterweg NV in Belgium.
The organization has always focused on putting this knowledge into practice, which in the past has led to various acquisitions and to supporting ailing and bankrupt social organizations. In recent years, the emphasis has been mainly on putting own ideas and products into practice. Triple E consists of the following business units:
Centre of Expertise Nature and Economy. Here, research is conducted into the benefits of nature and landscape and revenue models are elaborated for civil society organizations that see their old sources of income drying up and for governments seeking savings. The Expertise Centre’s products are: mapping the economic benefits of nature and landscape, strategic concept development, closing social deals.
Natural Soil Improvement. This unit focuses on research and production of Brickz. This is a patented product consisting of dried river sediment and other residual flows combined with mycorrhiza, seeds and other life. For this purpose, the organization has its own production and research greenhouse in Huissen. Natural Soil Improvement collaborates with organizations such as Rijkswaterstaat, water board Drents Overijsselse Delta, K3 Delta, Deltares, NIOO-KNAW, KIWA, Knowledge Centre Paper and Cardboard (Kenniscentrum Papier en Karton), HZ University of Applied Sciences, Wing Consultancy and Waterways and Sea Channel (Waterwegen en Zeekanaal).
Institute for Applied Economic Argumentation. This business unit focuses on publishing books and writing texts, as well as organizing workshops, lectures and landscape auctions.
