Natural Soil Improvement

Natural Soil Improvement is the newest business unit within Triple E. In recent years, Natural Soil Improvement has developed a product called ‘Brickz®’. A European patent has been granted for this product. The organization has its own research and production facility in Huissen, called ‘Phytorefinery the Growing Place’ (Fytoraffinaderij de Groeiplaats), where also trees and biomass are grown. Brickz® are a combination of dredging (we prefer to speak of ‘river sediment’) and mycorrhiza, supplemented with other residual flows and life (seeds, tree seeds, worm eggs, etc.). This makes Brickz® an important new product within the circular economy, because river sediment is the largest waste stream in our country and we convert it into a product that can be used as a soil improver by means of Brickz®.

Commissioned by the province of Brabant, we have developed new Brickz® for forestry together with Bosgroep Zuid. Research is currently being conducted into the application of specific residual flows in Brickz, such as champost and groats. With the Veolia, NIOO-KNAW, the Knowledge Centre for Paper and Cardboard (Kenniscentrum Papier en Karton), Grondslag and the Drents Overijsselse Delta water board, we are carrying out the Fiber2Fiber project, in which we are working on Brickz® containing mycorrhiza that break down asbestos. Within the framework of Fiber2Fiber, we are also working together with the Drents Overijsselse Delta water board on a product to use WWTP sludge as a substrate. We are carrying out an project for the province of Overijssel, in which we will examine whether residual flows from nature areas (scraped heather, natural grass, etc.) can be used as raw material in the Brickz®. We are also carrying out a project for the province of Brabant aimed at reusing residual flows. Our partner in this project is the State Forestry (Staatsbosbeheer).

Cooperation agreements have been signed with the following parties to further develop the product: K3 Delta, Groningen Seaports, Projects LTO North (Projecten LTO Noord), ECNC, NIOO-KNAW, the Delta Academy, ECNC, WING Consultancy, Micosat, Argex, the Flemish Government, KIWA and Heijmans. Brickz are produced at our location in Huissen, and tailor-made for every customer. Click here for our shop.
